You've got the beauty of nature to funky & cool! I love WALLTAT!
They're SO easy to put on, like I said my daughter helped me and it was a breeze!
It STAYS too which says alot!

The one I received was huge! I think I picked the biggest they had so I could pretty much cover my wall. This was put up in no time flat! Easy Peasy just how I like it.

From runway to her way

Jordan Guide left a model's life to become a designing woman

Who: Chicago/Burr Ridge-based interior designer.

Why: She's turning heads with her young, energetic designs and getting cool residential and commercial commissions. She also has launched her own online wall decal company (WALLTAT.com), which sells peel-and-stick wall art by designers and artists from around the world.

Her look/aesthetic: "I like clean lines; accessories and art with intent ... function, flow and unity."

Favorite color (of the moment): "Mixed shades of gray."

Early inspiration: Grandfather's in-home design studio (he designed logos) at Lake Point Tower, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and a collage of logo designs on the walls. Also, the Bauhaus furniture and fixtures put together by her grandmother, an interior decorator, that filled the living spaces.

Recently finished: Not-your-conservative-guy offices for a young trading firm in the West Loop. The guys wanted their work space to look and live like a sophisticated bachelor pad. Thus the hot tub on the roof deck. The living room with a built-in entertainment center and 60-inch LCD TV. The sexy spiral staircase to an upstairs party loft equipped with bar, fireplace and lounge seating.

Other notables: She proved "accessible" doesn't have to look institutional, designing a luxurious kitchen that also is highly functional (pull-down cabinet innards; faucet at the fore of the sink) for a client with physical challenges.

Major award: In 2007 (at age 27), won a coveted Design Excellence Award from the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers for that accessible kitchen.

Major dish: Her previous life as a model. Did ads for Marshall Field's, Sears, Calvin Klein. Did runway in Paris.

Reachable: Guide works as an independent contractor for Barbara Pallat Interiors, in Pallat's studio in Burr Ridge and in Guide's Chicago studio. Reach her at jordanguidedesign.com.

Guide's guide to what she loves

We asked Jordan Guide for a few design products she loves, with the caveat being it's got to be available at retail.

1. Purist Suite bathroom from Kohler: "It's open and contemporary," Guide says. "I want that bathroom." (The Kohler Store, Suite 100, Merchandise Mart, Chicago, us.kohler.com. Some prices: about $812 for the Wading Pool lavatory (sink); about $6,200 for the BubbleMassage bath.)

2. Bridge Coffee + Side Table: From West Elm, this low, chunky wood coffee table gets straddled by a glossy white/gray side table. "It's rustic meets new," Guide says. ($299 and $179, westelm.com)

3. Felted Wool Stones: "Instead of a beanbag chair or cubes to sit on, these are really fun, felted wool," Guide says. "They're like big boulders." ($298-$595, vivaterra.com)

Not all Wall Decals are Created Equal

Wall Decals have been creating quite the buzz lately and more and more people are using them to decorate and transform everything from living rooms, kids rooms and nurseries, even bathrooms and glass. The designs are fun and installation is a breeze. However, as you are searching for your perfect design it is important to note that not all wall decals are created equal.

Here are a few things to consider when purchasing wall decals online.

  • Size of Wall Decal: this seems like an obvious one but be sure to review the dimensions of your product with the picture shown. For example a site may show an image spanning an entire sofa but the dimensions prove to be much smaller. At WALLTAT we offer up to five different sizes to our designs, and show images that are true to size. We also encourage you to measure your space before ordering.
  • Vinyl Quality: this is probably the most important attribute when selecting your wall decal. Not only will a high quality vinyl decal last longer, it will maintain color and blend in with your walls better. High quality vinyl will have it's color throughout (also making it usable on glass surfaces) and for interior uses should be a matte finish. WALLTAT uses only High Quality Vinyl. We offer 34 different color options in a matte finish that is flame retardant and ideal for interior use.
  • Design Layout: for best results and design integrity you want the wall decal to come in as few pieces as possible, preferably one. This will insure that have a horizon or vanishing point will be visually consistent to the eye. Some providers will show a given design installed but what they are selling is individual elements. This requires you to lay them out and recreate the design. For some graphic designs this is desirable because you may want to create your own patterns, but if you are purchasing a design with scene it will be difficult to recreate the layout. Most standard sizes (A,B,C) of WALLTAT designs come in one piece to ensure design integrity. This means no guesswork on your part and your design will look exactly as you saw it on screen. For larger or multi-colored designs WALLTAT breaks the vinyl into rolls of 4 ft. and uses match points to for accuracy. Simply peel the backing and apply to your wall.

WALLTAT Wall Decal - Arbor Magic in the Washinton Post

The Washington Post takes on design requests from its audience and features them in "House Calls" in the Home & Garden section. In the March 12, 2009 issue Ed Rudock of Spacelift Staging and Interior (re)Design takes on the challenge of a homeowner that is adopting a newborn baby and would "love some help with decorating her [nursery]."

"The furniture arrangement started with the crib, which is the focal point," says Ed. He added to this focal point the Arbor Magic Wall Decal from the WALLTAT nature collection to really drive home the point.

WALLTAT Breaks Out Of The Artistic Box With Wall Decals

March 10, 2009 by Angela Shupe | 2 Comments
In Ecommerce, Home, Interviews

Almost every home, big or small, has something up to help make each room look a little brighter and welcoming. For those that want to think outside the frame, there is WALLTAT. While the abstract art-like decals might fit well in a living room, children are bound to enjoy something playful and fun for their own bedrooms. If youre feeling very unique, they also offer decals for your car.

Jordan Guide, the founder of WALLTAT, launched her company in May of 2008. Drawing from her own experience in interior design, she saw a niche and jumped on it.

What inspired you to create your business, WALLTAT?

As an interior designer, I am constantly looking for new and innovative products and materials. I have always been interested in creating wall art that challenges the boundaries of the interior space and not limited by the frame. I visualize elements growing out of the baseboards, flowing up a wall onto a ceiling, or spilling around from one corner into the next. WALLTAT is the brand that came out of these creations.

I noticed youre about to reach your 1 year anniversary. Have you accomplished all of your goals for the first year?

I wouldnt say I have accomplished all of my goals, but as a company we are pretty close. We spent the early months working out the kinks and challenges of our process, and now we are focusing more on our marketing and sales. We still have two months to go (we started in May 2008) so it will be interesting to see how the latest marketing efforts will impact our numbers.

Having walltat.com up and fully functional was a major accomplishment; and of course, seeing orders coming in and getting customer feedback is reassuring. So overall the year is a success.

What would you like to see happen in year 2 for your company?

I want everyone to know about WALLTAT, or realistically reach as many people as possible with the WALLTAT message and product. Maybe, have Oprah give them out at her show. I think there is a certain ring to our trademark WALLTAT that can quickly be genericized, and become synonymous with artistic wall decals.

How many styles/designs of walltats would you say are in stock on the average day?

Due to the customizable nature of our designs, all WALLTAT products are made to order, so technically zero. We do not carry any finished inventory. We have hundreds of WALLTAT designs, each offered in 36 colors and five different sizes. With todays technology it is not necessary to carry finished inventory.

Do you have any previous experience that has helped tie into the business?

As I mentioned earlier, my interior design background led to the creation of WALLTAT. This experience also gives me an understanding of the consumer from a dcor and budget perspective. For me it was important that WALLTAT be affordable so that it can truly be an option for our customers.

Also my experience as an independent contractor has helped in the business and organizational aspect of the company.

What lessons would you say you have learned from WALLTAT since you first decided to launch it?

Having a great product to sell is not enough. In todays Internet marketplace, it is as important to have a website that is Search Engine Optimized (SEO). This will increase your website visibility and lead to more traffic and sales.

Have you always envisioned yourself as the entrepreneurial type? What lead you to where you are today?

Yes. I have always been into art, which is what lead me into design. The beauty about design is you have the choice of working for a company, or for yourself, so I did a bit of both. Today, I am an independently contracted interior designer for a firm, which allows me the free time in between clients (and during my nights and weekends) to get the company off the ground. I enjoy working from my home studio for both of my companies. Its exactly the freedom I need to explore new possibilities in design and creativity.

Do you think this will be it for you, or do you hope to either expand WALLTAT or start into a new business in the future?

This is more of a beginning for me; I am 29 and have a lot of creativity that I need to get out. I love product design and will continue exploring new products, including ones within the WALLTAT brand.

What are some of the hardest things youve seen when it comes to running a business?

Finding vendor partners that value your business was most frustrating in the beginning. When you are a small company, you are not priority to most vendors. This is why it is important to find vendors that compatible in size and value your business.

What kind of traits do you believe every entrepreneur should have to become successful?

Patience, flexibility, resourcefulness, creative, negotiating skill, ambition, confidence, just to name a few.
